And I thought I had a bad day....

Cancer-stricken winner of million-dollar jackpot dies

NAPLES, N.Y. The upstate man who hit a million-dollar state lottery jackpot a month after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer has died.

Friends of 50-year-old Wayne Schenk tell the Canandaigua Daily Messenger that he died last evening at a Syracuse hospital.Schenk's story drew national attention after he won a million dollars on a five-dollar lottery scratch-off ticket in January. A month earlier, doctors told the tavern owner from Ontario County that he had only months to live because of lung cancer. The lottery winnings were to be paid out in 20 annual installments of 50-thousand dollars each.

Schenk tried unsuccessfully to get lottery officials to boost the payouts. When he died, he had received just 34-thousand dollars from his jackpot.Earlier this month, Schenk married his longtime girlfriend. Friends say he made sure he could pass on his winnings to her.
